Policies
Students of Community Education at Santa Monica College are generally governed by the same rules and regulations, as well as rights and protections of students enrolled in the college for credit-granting classes, except where fundamental differences between the types of classes may exist (e.g. no transcripts/grades for Community Services classes). Community Education?s most up-to-date policies can be found at Santa Monica College's website, www.smc.edu, and/or in the most recent college catalog.

This section below represents the most up-to-date information specifically about Community Education?s official policies, which may be updated from time-to-time.  All persons registered for Community Education offerings are subject to these policies.  Some offerings may allow visitors, guardians, spectators, etc. not registered as students.  These persons are not necessarily entitled to the same protections or rights as registered students and must comply with Santa Monica College  and legal rules for conduct, as well as offering-specific rules as they pertain to individual offerings.

Privacy & Personal Information
Personal, identifiable information is collected and maintained in our customer relationship management (CRM) system and related databases when students register for classes, create online accounts with Community Education, sign up for email or other distribution lists, etc. Community Education generally adheres to SMC?s "College Policies, Rules, and Regulations" as outlined here, except where Community Education differs fundamentally from SMC's credit-granting and Noncredit instructional modalities as defined by the California Education Code, California Code of Regulations or other applicable law or regulation. For example, Community Education is required by law to keep a separate registration database system from the credit and noncredit instructional division of the college.

By submitting your information to Community Education, you agree to be contacted by Community Education at Santa Monica College in the future for matters related to your registration(s).  This includes, but is not limited to communications about your transaction, schedule changes, class location, information related to class content, or to offer you the opportunity to give your feedback about the offering you attended. As part of the California Community Colleges system, Community Education is required by law to maintain records of enrolled students, but requests made in writing to alter this database will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis in light of our legal records-keeping requirements.

Community Education also utilizes customer student contact information as part of our outreach/marketing efforts.  If you do not opt out of our outreach/marketing list at the time of registration, you additionally agree to receive email, phone or mailed communications from time-to-time which Community Education feels may be of interest to you. These outreach/marketing efforts generally include, but are not limited to one or more emails per month notifying students of upcoming registration dates and highlights, discount and promotional offers for our class offerings, or news/updates about the program.

Customer students can opt out of being contacted by us as part of our outreach/marketing efforts at any time by sending an email to commed@smc.edu or by editing your online user profile. We value the personal information of our customers and will make every effort not to violate your privacy. At any time, if you wish to be removed from our mailing lists, you may click on the unsubscribe link at the bottom of each email sent.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS:

NO CANCELLATIONS AFTER A CLASS HAS BEGUN, so choose courses carefully! Requests for withdrawal from a class must be submitted in writing via email at least seven business days before the start date of the class; receipt of requests made via other methods, such as phone messages, will not be accepted. You may receive a credit voucher applicable to future Community Education classes, which is valid for two years from the date of issue. A minimum service charge of $10 per class cancellation will be withheld. Refunds are granted ONLY if a class is cancelled, discontinued, or rescheduled. In the instance of cancelled classes, the course fee is automatically refunded. Credit card refunds are processed within seven business days.

Transfers: To transfer to another class, request must be submitted in writing via email at least seven (7) business days before the original class meets. A minimum service charge of $10 per class transfer will be deducted.

Important Information: Refunds are NOT issued for absences nor prorated for late registrations. Missed class meetings may not be made up in another class. There is no auditing of classes. Students are highly encouraged to register before class begins. Returned checks will be subject to a $25 handling charge. Some high demand classes, such as glass fusing and Good Times Travel day trips, have separate and different refund policies stating that all registrations are final, and no refunds, credits, or transfers will be give. Please bear that in mind when registering for those classes.

Trips & Tours: Except where noted, cancellation and refund requests must be received two weeks prior to trip departure date, and will be granted only if space is re-sold by Community Education. It may be possible to send a substitute in your place with prior notice to Community Educatio. When approved, refunds will reflect processing fees per person AND any unrecoverable expenses such as lodging, tickets, etc.

Day trip fees and deposits paid to SMC Community Education: Refunds to reflect $20 processing fee per person. Tour fees paid to Good Times Travel: If travel protection has not been purchased, only recoverable funds less a cancellation charge of $50 will be reimbursed once payment has been made. If travel protection has been purchased, you will receive a full refund (or partial if enroute), minus the cost of the premium. Note: Travel protection/cancellation insurance for multi-day tours is highly recommended. Pre-existing medical conditions are covered only if protection is purchased at time of deposit. Insurance also available for day trips.

Certificate Programs/Series Courses: Some courses are offered as part of a series for discounted rates. If you decide to drop an individual class, or classes, from a certificate program or course series, discounts will no longer apply. Course fees will revert to the non-discounted amounts and the refund will be adjusted accordingly.
