Introduction to Screenwriting demystifies how to write for a visual and aural medium. Each class concentrates on different aspects of effective dramatic writing through the use of visual storytelling, conflict, plot, character development and rising action. We will be writing our own scenes from in-class writing prompts, while examining screenplays and scenes from various genres. Group discussions and lessons will peek behind the curtain to see what does or doesn’t work, dramatically speaking, and why. Students will be encouraged to create new scenes (the building blocks of a screenplay’s story), or to apply writing exercises and assignments to existing scripts that may be in need of creative CPR. Additionally, students will be provided with helpful links and recommendations for deeper dives into the screenwriting and filmmaking process.
